The Highest-Paid Intern in the Room

Read Time: 3-4 mins

Hey Reader

I woke up this morning to a brand new ChatGPT interface. It was rainbow-coloured gloriousness. GPT-5 was here. Did you see it?

In true Hannah fashion jumped straight in to test it on some company work - and wow.

It’s so much better. Like, really better.
The reasoning is deeper. It thinks longer. It analyses. It goes deep and wide.
The memory is sharper. I think that’s what caught my attention. It remembered things I hadn’t mentioned in over a month, and they’re not even saved in my official “memories.”

It’s fantastic.

If you’re not paying for ChatGPT Pro at a minimum, you are leaving money, career development, and client opportunities on the table. Get in now before the learning curve feels too steep to catch up. It’s uncomfortable - I get it, but it’s worth it.

Critical Insight

Here's the shift I want you to think about…. you aren’t becoming obsolete; you're becoming the highest‑paid intern. The one who does less “work” and more orchestration. Who learns faster than ever before, to help make the right movements and decisions. You’re moving from doing grunt work to conducting the AI orchestra.

Research supports this shift:

  • McKinsey’s “Superagency” report shows that while almost all companies invest in AI, only 1% believe they’ve fully integrated it into workflows. It emphasizes that leaders are the bottleneck, not employees - those who orchestrate AI unlock its full potential. McKinsey & Company

  • Power users of AI report massive gains: AI frees them to do higher-value thinking. Microsoft

  • The “Human-Agent Systems” model warns that fully autonomous AI isn’t the goal - well at least not yet. The real power lies in collaborative systems where humans guide agents - creating trust, adaptation, and finesse. A wonderful write up by Cornell University

For now, your job isn’t being replaced, it’s being redefined. With agentic AI, you’re stepping into the role of the intern: working alongside more capable “mentors” in the form of AI agents, watching how the work gets done, asking better questions, iterating together, and using those insights to level up your own capability and outcomes.

Food for Thought

  1. Pick one task you’d normally do yourself and give it to GPT-5 or another AI agent today. Watch how it approaches the work, ask it to explain its reasoning, and look for ways to improve the prompt together.

  2. Keep an “AI apprenticeship” log: each time you work with an AI tool, jot down one new insight, approach, or trick you’ve learned from it.

  3. Run a 30-minute team experiment: choose a real business problem and have AI act as the “senior mentor” in the room, guiding you through the steps while you handle the decision-making.

Final Word

GPT-5 isn’t here to replace you. I think it’s here to mentor you.

Right now, with agentic AI, we’re stepping into the role of the intern.
We don’t need to know everything because we have tools that can show us, teach us, and do alongside us.

Just like a great internship, the value comes from how closely you watch, how many questions you ask, and how quickly you apply what you’ve learned.
The closer you work with AI today, the more naturally you’ll lead it tomorrow.

Be curious.
Iterate.
Let the agents teach you and become the most valuable “intern” your organisation has ever had.

Highly paid of course!

A quick way to test clarity: Ask your team today
“In your own words, what exactly do you think I expect of you this week?”
Then brace yourself. Their answers might surprise you.
