September isn’t a reset button

Every August I hear the same thing: “Let’s reconnect in September.”

It’s almost like a business ritual. Summer slows down, inboxes quieten, decisions get pushed back, and then suddenly September arrives and the floodgates open.

Just because a deal, project, or partnership was pushed to September doesn’t mean it magically becomes a priority now.


Critical Insight

September isn’t a reset button, it’s a stack-ranking month.

Everyone comes back with full inboxes, competing priorities, and leadership demanding clarity on what matters most right now.

If you don’t help your prospects (or your own team) to re-rank priorities clearly, your initiative will get lost in the noise.

Research backs this up: companies that take time to explicitly prioritise and align in this phase see stronger execution later in the year. A framework published in BMC Health Services Research highlights that successful priority setting hinges on clear process, alignment across stakeholders, and explicit criteria for what drives value. In plain terms: if you don’t give people a way to decide, they’ll delay.

Your role in September isn’t just reconnecting - it’s galvanising action.

How to Re-Engage Smarter

When you’re reconnecting this month, go beyond “just checking in”. Try these stack-ranking prompts to cut through the chaos:

  1. Where does this sit in your current priorities? If you had to rank it against your other 2–3 big initiatives, where would it land?
  2. What’s your business’s appetite for moving this forward now? What would need to happen for this to feel urgent?
  3. Who else needs to weigh in? What would your board or leadership team want to see before backing this?
  4. How sustainable is your current approach? What’s the cost of waiting another quarter?
  5. What would you need from us to feel confident moving forward?

These aren’t just sales questions, they’re decision-shaping questions. They help your prospects bring clarity to their own internal debates while giving you the insight to position accordingly.


Food for Thought

September isn’t about “are we interested in this?” it’s about “where does this sit on the list?”

If you’re leading a team, ask yourself:

  • Have we mapped where each of our open deals sits in our buyer’s September stack?
  • Do we know which conversations are urgent, and which are likely to get deprioritised?
  • Are we ready to show the fastest, cheapest path to revenue (because that’s how many buyers will rank their priorities)?
