Coldplay, CEOs, and ChatGPT

Read Time: 3-4 mins

Hey Reader

What a week! From a full-day training rolling out a GTM transformation in London to a six-hour commute for an exciting reunion with a client in Manchester…it's been nonstop. But the real drama unfolded in my feed. OpenAI's launch of ChatGPT Agent unexpectedly had to compete for attention with Coldplay concerts and CEO dramas. Let’s just call this a classic case of CCC - Coldplay, CEOs, and ChatGPT!

I’m fascinated by what catches people's attention. Every platform - literally all of them - LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok - is going nuts with memes, jokes, and think pieces. Now, I’m not one to jump on every wave, but there's power in agility. Building that internal muscle to pivot quickly and capitalise on the surge of interest around these trends.

But today, I want to talk about something different: flash trends.

Critical Insight

This week, I got curious and checked Google Trends for "Andy Byron CEO."

Unsurprisingly, there was virtually no interest. Until recently, that is. The search spiked dramatically, nearly overtaking Taylor Swift, who’s essentially always trending!

Why should we care?

Because this proves how quickly curiosity drives engagement. People are Googling Andy Byron, checking out his company, and chances are, that attention translated into new clients, buzz, or at least curiosity-driven traffic.

Here's another interesting insight: A LinkedIn user with only 183 followers made a single post about the Byron controversy, and it completely exploded. Compare this to his other posts, which barely made a ripple. Riding this wave gave him over 326,000 impressions, hundreds of reactions, and dozens of new followers overnight. - But, look at the performance of the post the next day?...crickets

The lesson here? Recognize the difference between chasing every passing trend and strategically leveraging relevant moments that align with your brand, your voice, and your values.

Food for Thought

Here’s something to think through:

  • What if the real magic isn’t in chasing every long-term trend, but in skillfully harnessing these flash trends? Those quick, intense bursts of public attention?
  • It's not about blindly following the crowd, but being agile enough to spot these brief windows of opportunity, capture the moment, and convert fleeting interest into meaningful engagement.

Could your GTM strategy benefit from sharpening the skill of spotting - and leveraging - flash trends? Maybe you could leverage ChatGPT Agent to monitor trends - who knows? Just a thought.
