Are You Really Clear on Responsibilities?

Read Time: 3-4 mins

Hey Reader

This week, I had to hold my hands up and admit something uncomfortable: I assumed too much.

I assumed my team knew exactly what was expected, without being explicit enough or double-checking their understanding. Turns out, things weren’t as clear as I thought they were.

Sound familiar?

Delegation is a funny old thing. We all talk about needing to do it, yet often we avoid it. And when we do delegate, we usually do it poorly. We give vague instructions, expect others to "just get it," and then wonder why they don't.

Now, throw AI and digital agents into the mix, where clear instructions aren't just nice-to-have but essential and suddenly, this problem goes from irritating to critical.

So, let's talk about responsibilities.

Critical Insight

Too often, we assume teams know what's expected, but research clearly demonstrates that clarity in delegation is non-negotiable. Ambiguity leads to confusion, decreased motivation, errors, and missed deadlines. Clear, explicit communication, meanwhile, boosts productivity, engagement, and job satisfaction.

Recent studies emphasise that when leaders clearly define tasks, expectations, and outcomes, it significantly increases team effectiveness. One powerful study revealed that clear instructions directly improve employees' psychological empowerment, helping them take genuine ownership of their responsibilities, actively seeking feedback and improving results (Aishatu, Sebastian & Hossain, 2025).

The stakes are rising as we increasingly delegate tasks not only to people but to AI-powered agents. The difference between precise, explicit instructions and vague directions will literally determine success or failure.

Clarity isn’t optional. It really is a fundamental part of leadership.

Food for Thought

Pause and reflect:

  • How clear were your directions last week?
  • Can every member of your team articulate precisely what success looks like, why it matters, and when it’s due?

A quick way to test clarity: Ask your team today
“In your own words, what exactly do you think I expect of you this week?”
Then brace yourself. Their answers might surprise you.
